From my Prayer Closet – Praising God with Understanding continues…

October 25, 2012 by Gina | Leave a Comment

I am still relishing in my new find in Psalm 47:7.  The scripture says, “For God is King over all the earth, sing praises with understanding”. My favorite explanation for this scripture is found in Barnes Notes on the Bible which says the verse means, “an occasion on which great lessons or truths had been taught by the dealings of God”.

Tonight as I prayer journal I am thinking about a special lady in my Wednesday night class whom I was able to equip with this very verse.  After we finished watching Kelly Minter’s video in our Nehemiah study, my friend, who I will call Dolly, had an important question to ask me.  You see, my friend Dolly is retired, and she and her husband have the financial means to own a second home on the beach where they travel to frequently though I can’t imagine why.   Often “envious” women like me go on and on about how blessed she is to be able to go the Gulf Coast anytime she wants,  and yada- yada-yada.   Unbeknownst to me, all this fanfare makes Dolly very uncomfortable.  She just does not know how to respond to all this attention about her blessedness.  Consequently, our Nehemiah study shows significant video interviews from the Amazon, and lifts the veil to not only how economically needy those people are, but also to how fat we Westerners are with material goods.  It is appalling, really.  I think this is why Dolly was feeling “guilty” about her blessings – an attack by the enemy no doubt, but that is a different topic.  Back to Dolly’s question.  She wanted to know what to say in response to all us women who make a big fuss about her beach house.

The answer was so clear to me – impart Psalm 47:7!  “Take this good thing and give God praise while sharing how He has worked in your life”, I told her.  Few people know that Dolly was a struggling, single mom for many years.  In the past she has shared some amazing stories with me about how she struggled to put food on the table for her kids, and how God provided a working automobile to insure her income.  I encouraged her to share those stories of God’s provision and blessings with the women who bombard her with inquiries about her vacation home because we need godly women like Dolly to model.  We need to see godly women who made it through difficult days.  We need godly women who will declare victory over divorce and abandonment.  We need women who will praise God…with understanding!
