That’s right! I said it! You were designed for more than you know Boss-Sister! So the next question is – how do you access it? This is one of my most favorite topics and yet it stumps so many – Prayer! Now, don’t hit the snooze button Phyllis! The misconceptions about prayer is that it is either very boring or too daunting. If you feel this way, you are probably doing it all wrong. What about something fresh and new? And it can be fun and enjoyable. Say what??? Check out episode #36 of The Gina Duke Show Podcast the for starting point of your spiritual clarity. Then go to episode #37 to do life with me in my mini planning session about wrapping up Thanksgiving and preparing for sweet baby Jesus!

Episode #36: The Starting Point for More Spiritual Clarity for the Christian Leader

You were meant for today’s topic sister! God had you in mind when He created our topic for today and that is Prayer – okay, don’t hit the snooze button on me here Phyllis.  In case you believe prayer is boring, it’s because you are doing it all wrong.  Communicating back and forth with God – and yes it is a 2 way conversation –  is one of the most wonderful activities of this life that you can engage in.  Whether you feel good about your prayer life today, or not, I’ve got some good stuff for you today!  Welcome to episode #36 and this is a FAITH episode…

There are three main aspects to your relationship with God and I’ve already covered 2 of them  – Church Engagement – episode 1 (Spiritual Gifts) and episode 32 (biblical literacy) and prayer!

I can’t believe I am at episode 36 of my podcast and am just now speaking on the topic of prayer.  As you may or may not know, I am the author of a book on prayer titled Organizing Your Prayer Closet: A New and Life-Changing Way to Pray – my publisher is Abingdon Press.  It was named Best Book on prayer in 2014 by Christian Retailing. Depending on which publication you have – the original or the revised and expanded version, you will have 10 or 11 chapters about prayer.   I shared all the prayer tips and  insight I had been graciously given up until that point in that book. Plus I share a structured prayer journal.  Just to be clear, my book is about structured prayer journaling and not about prayer closets, even though the book title says that is … about prayer closets. But I will say that since you can write in it and carry it with you, it could be technically referred to as a portable prayer closet.

Funny thing is that I wanted to pitch “The Gripper” as the title of my book – bc well you can nicely fit my book in your hand/ or within your grip plus it’s where I go to get a grip.   So the title The Gripper seemed like a fairly accurate title for my prayer journal, don’t you think?

I believe God gave me the gift of structured prayer journaling as a way to impart 1 Peter 4:7.  It says – the end of all things are near; therefore, be clear-minded and disciplined for prayer.  I love this scripture.  If were to do a google search on 1 Peter 4:7, and select, you will find this scripture reworded multiple ways that all adds value and insight to what this scripture is about.

Do you struggle with prayer? If so, then let me help a sister out! 1 Peter 4:7 says 3 main things about prayer:

  1. Pray Quickly – The end of all things is near
  2. Pray Seriously – Be Clear-Minded (sober) – Ecc 7:2
  3. Pray Attentively – Disciplined / watch unto prayer

This is why structured prayer journaling is such a gift.  .  Unlike free hand journaling, my structured prayer journal has place to record all the things you are praying about… At night, which is when I prayer journal, my mind is cleared by the exercise of making entries into my prayer journal – think of a brain dump in my prayer journal…structured prayer journaling is a disciplined approach to prayer – its an activity more than just a mental process; this keeps me awake.  Have you ever fell asleep while praying? Well, that’s hard to do when you are writing in a journal.  Plus you can go back and make updates as God answers prayers – that is how we watch unto prayer!

Structured prayer journaling is how we bring things from the spiritual realm into our visual presence so we can physically see the hand of God moving.  Isn’t that awesome??? Yes it is.

Let me ask you –

Do you desire to be a more prayerful person?

Do you wish you could hear God and know where He is leading you?

Do you wish you could have a consistent prayer life?

How about more spiritual clarity?

37. When Your Holiday Doesn’t Go Down as Planned and How to Plan the Next One for Success \\ Mini Planning Session. Listen in here.

You made it boss-sister! You made it through all the activities of Thanksgiving, and I hope you had a wonderful time with family and friends.  For us, it was less than ideal bc we were hit with a terrible stomach flu.  My daughter who hosts Thanksgiving for our family, came down with a virus, as well as three of her sons, 3 nights before Thanksgiving.  It swept through and left.  My other daughter and I went over Wednesday and cleaned her house with the windows open.  Instead of canceling, we notified our family of what had happened so they could make their own decisions. Some elected not to risk it, especially those with younger children.  But those with older children came because they were passed the age of touching things and putting their hands in their mouth. Then 2 hours before everyone was to arrive, my son-in-law came down with it.  So we put him away in their onsuite and wiped everything down again with windows cracked.  And we carried on.  So it went a little sideways from our regular plans but we made it and enjoyed our time together as best we could.  Thankfully, no one else was hit with it.

The new planning idea I want to impart to you, is to do a review of your Thanksgiving holiday and make notes in your LFOI framework guide about anything you want to change, improve or not forget next year.  This is when this LFOI planning activity begins to compound for you.  I have my LFOI framework documented in a bullet journal and I have made my notes.

Now we are in the endgame of the holidays for 2021. This is the time now Phyllis for us to take everything we have learned in these mini planning sessions thus far and employ them so we can have the kind of Christmas we want.

As you know today, Dec 2 is one of my tips – it’s my By Day 2 of New Month rule – This is where I encourage you to make all of your purchases for any special events for the month by the second day of the new month.  Of course, December is different because it  has the biggest holiday.  So as far as it depends on you, you can hopefully get this done.  I did it last year and will have it done this year.  This means having all of my groceries, wrapping paper, hostess gifts and Christmas presents purchased.  This self-imposed rule helps me overcome procrastination, which otherwise may lead me to running around like a chicken with her head cut off at the last minute.  But mostly importantly my By Day 2 rule helps me take in the Christmas holiday with peace and calm so that I can really enjoy the true meaning of Christmas, the birth of Jesus.

And from Ep 29 – you learned to Simplify where you can – I served turkey tenderloin instead of cooking a whole turkey this year and it was one of the most stress-free things I could have done.  And as an update, it was good.  The packaged tenderloin had enough juices that it made a good rue for my giblet gravy – so it was a win-win.

So I encourage you to go back and relisten to all my mini planning sessions for tips like these.  Gosh, have I said lately how much I enjoy doing life with you sister?  I am very thankful for you.

Now, before we leave, there is something I really encourage you to prepare – it’s your heart and mind for celebrating the birth of our Lord and Savior – Jesus Christ.  We are now on day 4 of  Advent.  I never celebrated Advent growing up and still haven’t been quite as intentional about it as I want to be, but I am working on this new discipline.  Are you celebrating Advent? I would love to hear how you are celebrating it.  I’ll post this question in my Life and Leadership Strategies facebook group; I would love to hear your input.  The link is in my show notes.

In closing…

“The celebration of Advent is possible only to those who are troubled in soul, who know themselves to be poor and imperfect, and who look forward to something greater to come.” ~ Dietrich Bonhoeffer

And that is Jesus.
