Women’s Ministry Wednesday – Focusing, Facilitating & Fulfilling Your Church’s Mission

March 11, 2015 by Gina | 1 Comment

Women's Ministry

Just about every church has a mission statement these days.  I am going to share with you how I focus our women’s ministry to facilitate and fulfill our church’s mission.

Welcome to Women’s Ministry Wednesday!

According to Kent Schaffer a “Mission Statement (What You Do) [is] A one-sentence statement describing the reason an organization or program exists and used to help guide decisions about priorities, actions, and responsibilities,” and here are some examples that he gives from his article:

  • “Fellowship Church (Grapevine, TX): To Reach Up, Reach Out, and Reach In
  • Highpoint Church (Memphis, TN): Love God, Love People, & Make Disciples
  • Mosaic Church (Hollywood, CA): To Live by Faith, To be Known by Love, and to be a Voice of Hope!
  • The Rock (San Diego, CA): Save, Equip, and Send out a highly motivated ARMY of believers who engage every segment of society while remaining true to our DNA”

My church’s mission statement is “[We] exist for the purpose of reaching people for Christ, maturing people in Christ, and mobilizing people with Christ.”

I am sure your church has something similar to what I have listed above.  Do you know what yours is?  I hope so! Because it is critical that your women’s ministry line up with your church’s mission; it will help your church fulfill its mission.  Whenever I consider adding a new component to our women’s ministry, I make sure that it fits with our church mission statement.

I ask myself:

  • Will this reach women?
  • Will it mature women?
  • Will it mobilize women?

If it does none of the above, I abandon the idea.

Also, when I evaluate my women’s ministry, I make sure that I have at least one component that effectively fulfills my church’s mission statement by asking these questions:

  • What component reaches women?
  • Which offering matures women?
  • What part mobilizes women?

If none do, then I know something is missing from our women’s ministry, which leaves it imbalanced and lacking.

Lastly, I evaluate my women’s ministry to discern which part of the church mission statement do we need to emphasize.  I am finding that we, the church, are cyclical.  For instance, when we first started doing women’s ministry, we were like babes in Christ, so our women’s ministry mostly consisted of in-depth Bible studies to mature us.  Later, God gave us a vision of how to operate in ministry teams, working on ministry projects that mobilized us.  That season had an overreaching effect on our congregation as well.  At the moment, our women know how to mobilize themselves, and are doing so in various other ministries.  This is so beautiful to see!

That puts us back to “reaching” women.  So now, my team is prayerfully considering initiatives to reach more women.

What about your women’s ministry?

What part of your church’s mission is your women’s ministry lacking, fulfilling, or emphasizing?  Please share your thoughts in the comments section below.

Our Vision Statement at my church is, We are a community of faith, within the community, called to transform communities. Our church theme this year is C3! Our first WOP (Women’s of Praise) Meeting is coming up and I’d themed it “Chat and Chew.” What are some ideas that I can incorporate to make this first meeting effective and kickstart our year.
