“Around the Kitchen Table” Homemaking and the Mission Field

It’s time for our fourth installment of “Experiencing God Around the Kitchen Table”. If this is new to you, click here for the intro, plus I will have the subsequent links below.

Around the Kitchen Table

So far, this has been my favorite chapter of Marilynn Blackaby’s “Experiencing God Around the Kitchen Table” book. Chapter four is titled, “Homemaker or Missionary”. Because this chapter so adequately reflects a woman’ ministry in her home throughout the different seasons of both her and her children’s lives, I chose Ecclesiastes 3:1 as our focus scripture:

“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens”

Ms. Blackaby longed for mission work and finally realized that she had a mission field in her very own back yard. Many of the neighborhood kids, including a set of brothers whom had been abandoned by their mother, spent a lot of their afternoons in the Blackaby’s yard. She decided to take full advantage of this mission field by providing snacks and morsels of the gospel.

What about you?

Do you find that many of the neighborhood kids like to gather in your backyard? Are you making the most of every opportunity to show them the love of Jesus? Click here for our “Experiencing God Around the Kitchen Table” neighborhood game ideas.

Homemaking is not just about cooking and sewing, but what we do with these activities that adds to the home-y-ness of our sweet homes. Homemaking today also includes special event activities that make our kids feel special and loved.

Have you ever used a “Special Plate” to celebrate your kid’s special moments? I once had a “Special Plate” for our family. When my girls would make cheerleading or earn an “A” on a difficult exam for example, they would get their dinner served on our “Special Plate”. They loved it!

The Special Plate

Another activity our girls loved was “Family Game Night”! On many Saturday nights we played Monopoly, Clue or Candy Land to name a few. Click here for our Pinterest board to see some more great ideas for Family Game Night – some I have never heard of before, but sounds like a ton of fun!

Are you one of those moms who go all out for the holidays? I wish I had done more when my girls were younger and still at home, but I was working a full-time+ career job and was almost too tired to manage the things I did do for the holidays. Still, it would have been worth the effort.

We have a boutique called Ocassions across the street from our church, and they lent us some cute spring décor to showcase for them. Two of our ladies from church, Rhonda and Becky, whom are super decorators, put some tablescapes together for us.

One of our DIY moms, Amy, shared a wreath idea to celebrate kids who play baseball. What do you think about this wreath starter? Maybe you could do a special door wreath to commensurate your child’s sports season.

DIY Amy also did a demonstration for us on how she took a plastic dinner tray, and painted the center of the platter with chalkboard paint. Think of all the things you could write on this board: a scripture, congratulations note, birthday wishes or like one of my classes other member’s, Lisa, said – the menu. Her mother-in-law always writes the menu on a chalkboard when she hosts large family events. The possibilities are endless!

Ms. Blackaby’s chapter four gave our group of ladies an excellent topic for discussion. We enjoyed hearing each other’s homemaking ideas.

“When we are seeking to create a home for our families, we are only limited by our imagination” ~Marilynn Blackaby

I found this at Serving Joyfully and HAD to click to read. I am a missionary in Croatia, but over the past 10 years of being here, I am more and more convinced that this is not only a genuine form of missions, it is a necessary form of missions. It is exactly what Jesus called us all to do – serve where we are planted. I am actually coming out with a book in a week and a half about this very thing: being missional in new, unexplored and perhaps unusual ways – as well as the traditional way. I think the idea of missions is far broader than we’ve ever realized. Thank you for a very important and informative post!

Glad you enjoyed it Rosalind. So excited to hear about your new book! Thank you for your mission work to the people of Croatia. I have a dear friend, Zorica, from Croatia who now lives in the states. She critiqued my book for simplicity when I was writing it. I wanted someone who had not been raised in an American church to be able to comprehend my message. She did a great job. Thanks again and God bless!
